Tips for Traveling with a Teething Baby

Seth and I love traveling, that’s no secret. We had to take a very necessary break when I got pregnant, due to my hyperemisis. Towards the end of my pregnancy, we started planning the trips we wanted to take this year. Traveling with a baby can be hard, but I’m a firm believer that your baby can be a great traveler as long as you get them used to it as a young age. With that in mind, we set our first trip for when he was three months old. The universe threw us a curveball when we realized Bastian started teething at two and a half months old. I was terrified to take my teething baby on the plane. But there were a few things that we did to make the teething nightmare a little bit easier.

For the plane. I was dreading being that mom on the plane with a screaming baby. Bastian actually did fabulously on the plane. He slept most of the way on both flights. The reason babies cry on planes is because they can’t handle the change of pressure as well as we can. The easiest way we found to combat that is to have him sucking on something during takeoff and landing. We brought a bottle with us, and tried to time his feeding to coincide with when the plane took off. But since that’s one of those things that’s kinda hard to schedule, we made sure we had a pacifier he liked too. Bastian is famously horrible at taking a pacifier. He used to like the MAM ones but then about a month and a half ago he decided he hated it. We struggled to find one he liked, but the week before we left I found these ones by Tommee Tippee.

Teething toys. Because he’s so young, bastian still has a hard time holding onto his teething toys. As long as we help him, he loves chewing on them. We have two that we really like; a wooden teether and a little wooden rattle.

Teething tablets. I’m not a huge fan of Orajel. We brought some anyway in case he was unsoothable, but what we’ve really loved using are the chamomile teething tablets.

Lots of naps. The biggest travel adjustment we had to make was realizing we couldn’t just spend the entire day out and about, exploring. We had to head back to our hotel/Airbnb to let Bastian to take naps. He’d take naps in the car too, but we wanted to make sure he was well rested so he wouldn’t be additionally cranky.

Amber necklace. I feel like such a hippie mom for recommending an amber necklace for teething, but we’ve seen a huge change in Bastian since he started wearing this! The amber absorbs into his skin and helps reduce inflammation and keep him from being irritable. I’m a believer.

I don’t think having a baby should mean you stop traveling! Having a baby just means you have another little exploring buddy.
